Everyone talks about networking, but the word has a fuzzy meaning; what do we mean when we talk about networking? I think that one big misconception is that networking is asking what others can do for you. Simply put, networking, in my view, begins with offering others what you can do for them. In addition to being thoughtful, others will remember that you have passed along their business card, that you have emailed them a relevant professional article, or that you have offered a suggestion or piece of advice. Networking should be about making a brief, personal connection which may or may not lead to professional leads. Treat the person you meet as a means and not an end, and you will truly benefit from networking.
One last suggestion: one man who has many, many useful thoughts and suggestions on why to network and how to do it best is David Sherman. There is a lot of good information at Dave Sherman’s website.
