Latinas and Healthcare

I have lived in California for over ten years, and am a first generation immigrant.  I consider myself bilingual. However, when browsing the web, I find myself looking for the Spanish version of the information.

Recently, I had the task to find information on health insurance options, and I was happily surprised to find out that the material was available in Spanish or “Español”.  As I started reading through it, I found that the information was not just a poor translation of the site’s English version- it was quite good!

It made me feel comfortable and welcome to the websites I was considering using as health providers (Kaiser Permanente, BlueShield). Also, it made me feel that the site was giving me reliable information and I could trust it. My experiences two years ago were the opposite; I found myself disappointed when reading websites in Spanish that were poor, machine-produced translations. Now I am more confident that  I may be able to find reliable information in Spanish. I am glad companies are realizing the importance of the Spanish-speaking audiences, and I look forward to more quality “Español” links.
