Latinos and Immigration

In a recently released study from Pew Hispanic Center, Latinos are divided over the many issues involved with illegal immigration.  Just one of the interesting findings is what Hispanics living in the U.S. think about the impact of illegal immigration.  In the latest study, 29% said that the impact was positive versus 50% in a 2007 study.

Of the nearly 50 million Latinos in the U.S., 38% are immigrants, and it is estimated that 19% are unauthorized immigrants.  When comparing the opinions of native born versus foreign born, there are some significant differences of opinion.  Just one example is that less than 70% of native born Hispanics say that immigrants strengthen the country, while 85% of immigrant Hispanics say that immigrants strengthen the country.

There are of course many issues where the responses are in agreement across all segments, and one of those is that 86% of Latinos support providing a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants if they pass background checks, pay a fine and have jobs versus only 68% of the general public feeling the same way.  In one of the hot button issues of 2010, Arizona’s SB 1070 law to give police broad powers to check immigration status, which is approved by the general population at a ration of 2 to 1, the Latino population surveyed disapproved of the measure to the tune of 79%.
