According to a recent survey of more than 750 small to midsized business (SMB) respondents, marketing budgets are on the way up again. This is indeed good news- especially so for those in the digital realm. Key factors prompting growth in 2011 seem to be an increased expectation of the role and impact of social media and the more concrete and clear-cut return on investment in e-mail marketing efforts. More and better tools have fostered greater understanding and more effective use, which has also improved adoption of said tools across the board.

Heading into 2011, most SMBs plan to increase their marketing expenditures in both online and print mediums, with online activities receiving the largest increases. E-mail, website and social media marketing are among the marketing initiatives expected to increase the most.

The survey, conducted by Zoomerang, an online survey and polling tool, and GrowBiz Media, an SMB content provider, offers an understanding of how companies with fewer than 1,000 employees plan to allocate 2011 budgets.

Among the more than 750 businesses surveyed, a third indicated that they currently use social media in their marketing mix. Of those using social media, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter were the most common channels chosen, with Facebook far outpacing the other two.

More small to midsized companies are incorporating social media practices into their business development strategies. As a result, this area of marketing is poised to see a substantial growth spurt next year. It is hopeful that with these business owners planning to increase their 2011 marketing budgets, perhaps that, in turn, will lead to an overall economic boost in our economy.
