YouTube (more like Google) wants to revolutionize the world of online advertising.  How? In Mountain View, they’re developing different ad units which will allow users to decide which ad they’d like to see; they can even choose to not see any ads if they want.

The system, which has been dubbed TrueView, offers users three different ad units, and YouTube will then charge the chosen advertiser.  In shorter videos, the user will see an ad that he can reject; when the content is longer, the system will allow two options: watch the video with or without commercial breaks, but sitting through two videos first.  In any case, the concept isn’t new, since Hulu uses a system that allows users to select ads, although they don’t offer the option of skipping them altogether.

It remains to be seen what the reaction of YouTube users will be to Google’s latest effort to make YouTube profitable once and for all.  The competition exists, although it is light years from catching up to the online video giant.   Nevertheless, if users feel that True View interferes with their experience, they can look for other services.
