It seems that everyone wants to share and participate online these days, and since we are such a diverse world, it seems only fitting that our social medias expand beyond the big 4: Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Linkedin. There are in fact hundreds of social networking communities out there, and I´m sure more are being developed as you read this.
But how do they differ? The big 4 seem to have the general market, but the others tend to be more focused in one area, more for niche groups. For example deviantArt caters to the arts community, Last.fm for music lovers, MyChurch for christians, etc. And then we could go a step further to categorize new social medias within genres. Take the Spanish-speaking-world genre. Within that sector, there are several networks such as Festuc.com, which is a mobile-based network allowing people to meet new people based on geographical closeness. The list goes on…
The questions are: Can one of the many ever rise to a big 4 status? And how long will this “boom” last? It will be interesting to see how these networks either grow or fizzle, and if marketers take a serious interest into the “alternative” networks. As my mother always told me, we´ll just have to hide and watch.
