La Reina del Sur
“La Reina del Sur” (The Queen of the South) has been Telemundo’s breakout hit of the spring, earning the network´s strongest three months´ viewership in its history, with an average of over 1.2 million total viewers. The telenovela is the most expensive ever produced, but the investment certainly looks like it has paid off. In March, it beat ALL English-language programming in large DMAs like New York and L.A.
So why is “La Reina del Sur” such a juggernaut? Well, I watched one episode this week to see what all the hype was about. Sure enough, I saw better production values than in most telenovelas, since the main character, Teresa Mendoza, travels all over Europe, North Africa and North America, tending to her drug empire. Yes, the other thing that makes “La Reina del Sur” stand out is the plot. This is not the story of a poor little rich girl being courted by Prince Charming; rather, it is the tale of one Mexican woman’s rise to the top of the international drug trade. Played by the great Kate del Castillo, Teresa Mendoza is a strong female character. It’s no wonder that this entertaining show is getting more viewers than the networks.
