So why is it that Americans continue to see and talk about Mexico as if it´s this big scary land full of drugs and corruption, when out of all the places “gringos” can travel, Mexico ends up as the #1 destination in 2010? That´s right, the majority of Americans vacationing in the last year chose Mexico.
Maybe it´s time we put things in perspective. As the Mexico Tourism Board´s Rodolfo Lopez Negrete states in an interview with CNBC, “There are 2,500 municipalities in Mexico and the violence is primarily in about 80 of those;” basic math shows that there are still around 2,420 safe zones to visit in a country that is just full of wonder. And obviously, many Americans have found this to be true.

Unfortunately, I feel there are many misconceptions about traveling south of the US in general. Mexico, Colombia, Chile, etc., they are all cultural gems, and with the normal precautions, make for rich travel experiences, lasting memories. And, as we´ve already mentioned, Latin America is a great big overlooked market, rich in opportunity. So be it for travel or business, let go of preconceived notions and check the facts, south of the US is the place to be and see.
