The MLS, or Major League Soccer, is the United States’ professional soccer league, and is composed of 18 teams, 16 of which are in the US and two in Canada.
In the MLS, many Latino players—from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, etc.—have been asked to play for their athletic skills, competing for a place among American players, and many are triumphant. A good example is Marco Pappa, a Guatemalan who plays for the Chicago Fire. Pappa not only has earned a place on the team, but, in this current tournament, has twice been named the Jugador Latino de la Jornada (The Latino Player of the Day).
Other examples are the Salvadoran players Mauricio Cienfuegos (LA Galaxy), Raul Dias Arce (DC United) and Ronald Cerritos (San Jose Earthquakes), Bolivians Marco Antonio “El Diablo” (The Devil) Etcheverry and Jaime Moreno, who both play for DC United, the Colombian Carlos “El Pibe” (The Kid) Valderrama, and so many more. These guys, in addition to being good players, have also helped the league by bringing many Latino fans to the stadiums.
