Domain Names

The internet is about to see a big change come 2012, as ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) just gave the go for companies and organizations to create whatever generic top-level domains (TLDs) they want. What that means, is we´ll probably be seeing a lot less .com and lot more brand-name related web site enders, such as .apple for example, or who knows, the options are endless!

Endless for those willing to pay however, as the application fee is a whopping $185,000, $25,000 a year to maintain it. I guarantee that won´t stop the big spenders though, large corporations will soon be buying up TLDs, outbidding others for the best. This will surely change the way we act online, from finding information to doing business.

“Today’s [June 20] decision will usher in a new Internet age,” said Peter Dengate Thrush, Chairman of ICANN’s Board of Directors. “We have provided a platform for the next generation of creativity and inspiration.”

And since there are no language restrictions, the possibilities are .endless.

  1. Alcance Media Group will officially start taking donations for the $185K application fee now so anyone with an extra $200k (round numbers are nice) feel free to contact us. Hopefully this comes down in the future but is an interesting development in the battle for domain names.
