Hispanic Voice
A recent Hispanic News article by Monica Davey makes a really good point: Here we all are talking about this grand Hispanic population surge in the US, yet, what about their political clout?
Right now, the issue is redistricting. As states are going through this crucial, Congressional re-mapping process, the playing field is changing, and a battle has begun. For example, due to the new Republican-leader drawn maps in Texas, several Hispanic groups are filing lawsuits, claiming the maps “solidify Republican control and essentially ignore Hispanics.” With Hispanics being seen more in favor of Democrats, it does make one wonder.
As Andres Ramirez, a political consultant and leader of a Nevada Hispanic Redistricting Coalition, points out, “Hispanics have become the political football this year.” These mapping changes will determine just how big the Hispanic voice can become. It will be interesting to see if the country´s largest minority group will be justly represented in their Congress.
