A recent CNN report looked at Hispanic movie attendance. Nielsen examined data from 2010 and found that 43 million Hispanics purchased 351 million movie tickets, an increase from the 37 million who bought 300 million tickets the previous year. As a result, Hollywood is trying to develop more nuanced marketing, finding ways to make mainstream films more inclusive and make movies targeted to Hispanics.

What’s more, producer Elizabeth Avellan is quoted as saying that Hollywood is trying to crack the code of how to target the Hispanic moviegoer. Hispanics are already attending blockbusters like Spiderman and Harry Potter; the production company Pantelion Films has already been working on making movies for this demographic, though with mixed results. I think that Hispanics, like any moviegoer, just want to see good stories that are well-told. Nevertheless, they would also like to see actors and actresses on screen who look like them. It will be interesting to see how Hollywood continues to target this market.
