Are Hispanics Still a Minority

Are Hispanics Still a Minority

When I think of people or organizations who are in a particular minority, I think of the fact that they are outnumbered, that they can’t stand up for themselves and have to abide by the rules that the majority has implemented for them. But, why is this? Is this because people of non-Anglo descent are smaller in numbers, or is it because they are supposed to feel that way?

According to William Frey, a demographer with the Brookings Institution, Hispanics now make up 26 percent of city populations, while Blacks make up 22 percent, and there are still various other ethnic groups who push the total number to well over 50 percent. Within the next 30 years, there will be more minorities than whites in this the US. The US is becoming a melting pot to its truest form.

In 30 years, will multicultural advertising budgets match general market budgets? Highly unlikely, but it should be nowhere near the 4.8 percent that was spent in 2010. Many Hispanics have a strong connection to their roots, whether they were born in the US, became a citizen or speak English perfectly. Advertisers need to take this into consideration as the Hispanic population continues to increase.

So, at what point can we say that Hispanics are no longer a minority?
