The digital house
For some time already, big scientific laboratories and technology companies, such as Intel, Phillips, and Microsoft, have talked about intelligent houses and some have even been built (for example the house of Bill Gates).
Now, for the first time, different technology companies have collaborated to build a digital house, whose advanced computer system collects information every time the residents flush the toilet, turn on the lights or open a closet. The creators say that it is the most impressive “residential laboratory” in the world and aims to study what people do in their homes in order to gather enough information to create the most intelligent house of the future- a house that will be able to respond to the necessities of its residents.
According to the architect and head of the research group in charge of the project, “until now nobody has built a scientific instrument like this, capable of measuring the relation between the people and technology.”
One of the first areas of research will be to study the residents’ diets and exercise habits in order to develop new technologies that help people make healthier decisions, through a warning system that goes from voice messages to lighting changes in the house. Another study will focus on improving the security system for the elderly (cameras, sensors, etc.)
Considering the fact that the world population is constantly growing, inventions like these may be fundamental for humans of the future.
