Do you want to know what I am sick and tired of hearing? “Starting next year I’m going to get in shape…starting next year I am going to make more money…starting next year I am going to be happier.” On January 1 everyone is very motivated to accomplish their goals and fulfill their New Year’s resolutions. Try going to a gym after 5pm during the 1st two weeks of the year; look around and notice how many of your coworkers are working their tail off during the 1st month of the year; and pay attention as to how many people are glad to put their problems from last year behind them. So why do things eventually change and go back to the way they were?
I believe it’s because change is something that doesn’t happen overnight. You hear the phrase “overnight sensation” many times in the entertainment industry. Yet, the public doesn’t know how many times the person performed for small crowds or took acting classes in high school, college, etc. Change is an evolution of many different steps. Someone that is looking to become fit in the new year should start with a couple of changes. Go to the gym one day a week, then 2 days a week, then 3 days, etc. Same thing with dieting. A person looking to become more successful should also start with small steps. Read a book on what it is that you would like to be more successful at, then network with people who can help you become more successful, etc.
A year can seem like it just flies by, but it can also seem long and drawn out if you are not enjoying the life that you live. It’s important to not give up on yourself as you progress. You may be swayed to take some time off from the gym or to coast until your vacation comes around at work or allow yourself to be unhappy for an extended period of time. That definitely will not help you reach your goals. There is a system that I recommend to help you organize your life and your goals. It is called Living Your Best Year Ever by Darren Hardy. I am currently working through the system in preparation for an incredible 2012!
