After writing about the top videos of 2010 on YouTube, I became more fascinated than ever with what makes a video go viral. Why were videos featuring Harry Potter and Twilight less popular than a local news video featuring a flamboyant young African-American man? It seems that video-virality is one part alchemy and a lot of luck and good timing. It seems that the top videos of 2011, however, conform to more traditional trends.

Among the videos of 2011 were two animal videos, a cute baby video and two covers of pop songs. One commercial that aired during the Super Bowl was included, which featured a young Darth Vader and was widely lauded as the top ad of the year. An inexplicable meme, Nyancat, made the list along with the comedic stylings of Lonely Island featuring Michael Bolton. Finally, topping the list was a video that involves internet memes, comedy (unintentional in this case), and pop music- Rebecca Black’s Friday.  I can’t wait to see what 2012 has in store when it comes to online video.
