Thanks to new technology, today it is possible to be connected at all hours and check email or social networks at anytime. This makes it so many people are incapable of resisting the the temptation of entering their Facebook profile or checking their Twitter account at any given time. One study that will be published in the magazine Psychological Science affirms that social networks provoke more addiction than alcohol and tobacco.

The researchers, from the Booth School of business (University of Chicago) carried out a survey of more than 200 people between 18 and 85 years of age with the end of discovering what the most common daily temptations are and which are the most difficult to resist. Although the results show that the most frequent longings have to do with sleep and sex, people give in most easily to the temptation to check social networks, because this is a desire that is easy to satisfy. On the other hand, it is easier to resist the urge to smoke a cigarette or have a drink, factors that habitually are the causes of addiction. While alcohol, coffee, or tobacco are things that have an economic and sanitary cost, the access to social networks is perceived as an action that “costs a little” to participate in, as explained by the researchers. It is precisely for this reason that it is much more difficult to resist the temptation to use them.
